What We Offer

Alchemists are a provider of specialist production and design services for environmental monitoring and research equipment. We pride ourselves on providing equipment made of robust materials crafted to a high standard to withstand the rigours of field sampling. Our equipment is made by our two person team in Rotorua.
We have some standard products which are primarily focused on equipment used for sampling in rivers, streams, lakes and estuaries. A quick summary of our standard products is provided on this webpage however take a look at our latest Product Brochure for more details.
We also provide replacement nets for most of the products we sell.
In addition to our standard range we can provide “one-off” custom designs for a particular process or project. Our brochure (above) provides some examples of what we have provided as “one offs” in the past.

Electric Fishing Equipment
Large Scoop Net
This scoop net is 300 mm in diameter, constructed of a solid 9 mm aluminium hoop mounted onto a wood or fiberglass pole. The pole come as a 1.2 m length, but can be cut shorter to suit your needs.
The net is constructed from 4 x 4 mm ply knotless black mesh or in 2.5 x 2.5 mm 5 ply knotless blue mesh. This scoop net is 400 mm deep.
Small Scoop Net
This scoop net is 200 mm in diameter, constructed of a solid 6 mm aluminium hoop mounted onto a wood or fiberglass pole. The pole come as a 1.2 m length, but can be cut shorter to suit your needs.
The net is constructed from 2.5 x 2.5 mm 5ply knotless blue mesh. The scoop is 300 mm deep.
Stop Nets – with poles
We can produce stop nets in any of our mesh sizes for use in the field. The nets come with a heavy chain link base and can be made with either wooden or fibreglass poles. The standard stop net size is 1.4 m wide and 1.1 m high with 1.6 m poles.
We can also make smaller versions which some clients have found handy for use in narrow streams (1 m wide x 800 mm high).
Seine Nets- long stop nets
Custom size seine or long stop nets can be made to suit the width/type of streams you are electric fishing. Contact us with you specs for a price.
Fish Measuring Boards
Very Robust measuring boards made from folded aluminium. Standard size are 300mm or 600mm long
Invertebrate Nets and Plankton Nets
D Shape – Invert Net
Standard 500 mm wide “D” shape kick net. Made with 500 µm monofilament mesh and soft durable polyester webbing. Also available in 250 µm mesh. Design meets NZ protocols for invertebrate sampling.
Sturdy 12 mm solid aluminium frame and handle (1.2 m long). Additional option for fitting of a sample collection cup.
Triangular – Invert Net
Small kick net with a 300 mm wide triangular mouth. Made with 500 µm monofilament mesh and soft durable polyester webbing. Also available in 250 µm mesh.

Surber Sampler – Invert Net
Made with 500 µm monofilament mesh and soft durable polyester webbing. Also available in 250 µm mesh.
0.1 m2 sample area within frame. Design meets NZ protocols for invertebrate sampling.
Sturdy aluminium frame. Net collapses for ease of transport and handling. Additional option for fitting of a sample collection cup.
Hester-Dendy – Invert Sampler
Small kick net with a 300 mm wide triangular mouth. Made with 500 µm monofilament mesh and soft durable polyester webbing. Also available in 250 µm mesh.

Sieve Bucket – Invert Sampling
Our invertebrate buckets are great for sieving samples. Made of stainless steel bucket and mesh they are lightweight and robust for using in the field.
Internal mesh is 500 mm stainless steel. This is protected by heavy 10 mm stainless steel mesh on the base. Bucket is fitted with a spout for easy decanting.
Plankton Nets
Our plankton nets come in a standard size of 200 mm diameter and 400 mm long. They feature a collection cup at the toe end which unscrews to decant the sample.
They can be made in a range of mesh sizes.
Water Clarity Measurement
Black Disk Sets
We can provide secchi discs and viewers for either stream or lake water clarity measurements.
Black discs come as sets with standard diameters of 200 mm, 100 mm and 60 mm. All are made of black acrylic.
River/stream horizontal disc viewer
Made in sturdy aluminium with double handles and rubber face “gusset” (picture one). We also make the standard pole on which to mount the black disc.
Vertical Viewers
Vertical viewers for secchi disk measuring or assessing other things underwater.
